Confessions of a FORMER Internet Marketing Dunce!

Thursday, May 27th, 2010
Have you ever gone to a mall or large shopping center and felt overwhelmed at how many stores there were?

Did you wonder which direction to go first? Should you go left…or right?

It was probably quite scary…and frustrating.

That’s the way I was when I first started out in Internet Marketing.

Although I am somewhat of a “techie” and could build a halfway decent web page, beyond that I just couldn’t wrap my head around how to get people to visit my sites.

The truth is that with 15 years of in-the-trenches direct response marketing experience I knew how to market…I just couldn’t figure out how to find the right people to market to.

I could submit articles, leave forum posts, use Google adwords, classifieds…and many, many other methods of getting traffic.

But with overwhelm comes confusion, and with confusion comes a lack of action.

If you look to the left of this post, you’ll probably notice the graphic of the big red arrow that says…YOU ARE HERE!

I intentionally chose this graphic because in most malls or shopping centers there are strategically posted maps showing all of the different stores in the mall.

But this information is useless, without knowing where you are. That’s why the maps always contain a red dot or arrow that tells people where they are.

The words YOU ARE HERE give people a perspective of where they are in relation to all of the stores they want to visit.

My mission with this blog, my newsletter and the reports, audios and videos I will be providing is to help take the confusion, overwhelm and fear out of making money online – and to make it fun and exciting instead.

As you think about the YOU ARE HERE graphic for a moment, remember this.  You are no different than anyone else when it comes to building their business.  Even the biggest gurus out there started without a list, without a following and without any sort of guarantee they would succeed.

In future posts I will provide you with tips and insights to getting past any fear you may have about building an online business and will also share many of the marketing strategies I have learned over the past 15 years helping my clients and the companies I have worked with to successfully sell their products and services.

I hope you’ll join me for the ride.  I promise that not only will it be fun…it WILL be worth your time.

Jonathan

  1. Dear Jonathan,

There is so much hype out in the internet marketing world and it’s so confusing and overwhelming that I just throw my hands up and say, “The Heck With It.” But if you’re really going to spell it out and take an absolute novice like me by the hand and lead me down the path of prosperity and clarity of mind, count me in. Thanks for being different than all the gurus out there.

  2. Tooche! I think that is how you spell it? Thanks for writing on my blog brother-dude! Things can get crazy and calm. I need to take advantage of the calm.

    Peace!

  3. Hi Jonathon,
Great post dude, I suffered info overload for toooo long. Finally getting through it though, hope you are too. All the best.

  4. Hey John,

I’ve only known you for a few days now and have discerned that your open and honest approach for helping people is quite different (in a good way) from all the rest.

All I ask is that you continue to keep it real and I know for certain that you will continue to be blessed. Not only financially but in every aspect of your life.

    God Bless,
    Keith

  5. Jonathan-
I love your focus and aim for this blog! I intend to stop back quite often to see just what you have in store for us! I love the you are here! It is a great touch that sucked me right in. I will have to start using graphics to help out with my site!

  6. Good analogy between internet marketing and a shopping mall. We need directions, we need a way out of hype. A blog like yours is a good station to stop at and get informed. A network of blogs clearing the path is what can save the day to confused internet newbies.

That is what spurred me to create a blog on the theme of focusing: http://www.focusingwithyou.com

  7. Hi Jonathan

Yes I understand what you are saying. I had no idea what internet marketing was all about and I could have easily thrown in the towel because I got ripped off but I am intent on staying the distance and making money.

A little about me – My name is Sue McDonald and I am a student of Mark Terrell and I am actually going through the course a second time – by invitation. I love it and know if I do all he says, I will be successful. I am Australian but the US is my second home as I have family there and visit quite often. This is why I started Internet Marketing so I can travel whenever I want and have the money to do what I want.

Well I hope you are doing well and you become very successful. I would love you to come visit my blog and leave a comment.

    Kind regards

    Sue

  8. Jonathan,

Now that you are on track, it would be interesting if you would post what you are doing differently than before and why you feel it is more “on-track” than before.

  9. Hi Cheryl,

You are right. I really should be posting more.

I am in the middle of making some huge changes to the way I market one of my sites and the process is taking a lot of time to set up. So far, based on the results it is worth the time. I’ll post details and statistics soon.

    Thanks for the comment.

  10. Hi Jonathan,
I knew I was going to like this post when I read the title. Gosh, it seems like we all travel down the same darn road, doesn’t it?

The important thing to remember is that, with hard work, that road will lead to success.

    To your success,

    Lesley
